College Plan 102 provides solutions for the transition stage of college planning.  This stage is for students from the 9th grade to the 10th grade.

Academic Strategies- Once high school starts it’s time to focus on the curriculum.  This is the first of many academic strategies to choose from.  Other strategies include college admission tips, simplifying the application process, and college selection strategies.     Savings Vehicles-After determining the appropriate college savings vehicles it’s time to make sure everything is working as planned.  Here are some savings vehicles that may require attention prior to attending college:

  • Qualified Tuition Plans such as the 529 plan or a Prepaid Tuition Plan.
  • US Treasury Savings Bonds, including Series EE Savings Bonds and Treasury Inflation-Indexed Securities (TIPS).
  • Coverdell Education Savings Accounts also known as Education IRAs.
  • UGMA/UTMA Custodial Accounts

Financial Aid- Now is the time to start getting ready for financial aid.  Start determining the proper ownership of assets, understanding the FAFSA, and other forms of aid that are available. Tax Planning for College- The shift is from the savings strategies to understanding the distribution strategies.  See IRS Publication 970 for specific rules.

All of this planning in the latter stages of college planning can put you on the fast track for your success.  For more information go to the Home Page under Resources.
